Mike De Souza – Guitar / Compositions
Huw V Williams – Double Bass / Electric Bass
Jay Davis – Drums
This Trio formed in early 2017, after Mike was offered a gig at his local E17 Jazz club. He thought it would be great opportunity to ask drummer Jay Davis and bassist Huw V Williams to join him for a one-off gig playing some new tunes he had written. The trio met up for a few long rehearsals in Mike and Jay’s living room, and the band spent many hours finding their sound, whilst learning to play Mike’s compositions.
The E17 Jazz gig took place in April 2017, and it was clear from the great vibe on stage, that they should take the band further. Over the next year, the band continued to learn new music that Mike had composed, and did a series of gigs in small clubs around North London.
In the Summer of 2018, the band did a 3-day recording session at Giant Wafer Studios in Wales, recording enough music for two CDs. In December of that year, the Trio launched their debut EP ‘Road Fork’ with a performance at the Vortex Jazz Club in Dalston. It was around this time that a live performance of the song ‘Road Fork’ (recorded at a recent ‘Jazz In The Round’ gig) was aired on Jazz FM by Jez Nelson, and soon after that, fellow Jazz FM DJ Chris Philips played the track ‘Turtle Talk’ on his show.
In October 2019, the Trio released ‘Slow Burn’, Mike’s debut album as a leader, which was accompanied by a 15-date tour of jazz clubs around the UK. As part of this tour, the Trio performed a special album launch gig at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, which featured guest artist Sam Rapley on both Tenor Sax and Bass Clarinet.
The Album was well received in a number of magazines and online journals, including Jazzwise, All About Jazz, The Jazz Mann, London Jazz News, and the Dutch Progressive Rock Page. The tracks ‘Going Places’, ‘Living With Nuns’ and ‘Late For Breakfast’ were also played by DJs Helen Mayhew and Chris Philips on Jazz FM.
